Stolen BML dollars yet to be recovered after airport robbery

More than a week after the robbery of a Bank of Maldives (BML) briefcase containing US dollars at Velana International Airport (VIA), the stolen money has not yet been recovered.
The robbery took place early on Monday morning last week, when masked men stole the briefcase from the walkway connecting the old and new terminals of the airport.
Police arrested five suspects in connection with the case the same day. Reliable sources confirmed that the stolen briefcase contained more than USD 100,000, equivalent to over MVR 1.5 million at a rate of MVR 15.42 per dollar.
Four men remain in custody pending trial. They are:

The suspects were initially remanded in custody for five days and were later ordered to remain in detention pending trial.
According to police, the four were arrested from K. Huraa after travelling there by speedboat following the robbery. The same vessel used in the crime was later seized by police from Huraa harbour.
The investigation into the theft remains ongoing, and police have not yet located the missing funds.
