Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Mohamed Daud has been removed from his position as Head of Hulhumalé Police and reassigned to report directly to the Commissioner of Police, following allegations of corruption linked to the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) case.

Police confirmed on Tuesday that the decision was made after the parliamentary Finance Committee’s sub-committee issued a report on 14 October alleging that Daud had received large sums of money from various sources, including proceeds connected to the MMPRC corruption scandal.

Daud has denied the allegations.

Police said the decision to remove Daud was based on two ongoing inquiries: one by the National Integrity Commission (NIC) into his conduct, and another by the Finance Committee that raised “serious allegations” of financial misconduct.

“The officer has been relieved of his responsibilities and will report only to the Office of the Commissioner until a decision is made,” police said in a statement.

Assistant Commissioner Ahmed Mohamed has been appointed as the new Head of Hulhumalé Police. Police said the transition of responsibilities initially took place on 14 October, when Daud was on leave, and has now been formalised.

According to the Finance Committee’s report, Daud is alleged to have acquired assets worth MVR 14.6 million through the MMPRC corruption scheme. The report further claims that:

  • He received large sums of money from unidentified sources over the past two years.

  • Since November 2016, rent payments from a property registered as MA. Thalhamudhigeyge were deposited into accounts belonging to Daud and his wife.

  • The property in question was constructed through a significant financial investment, the source of which remains unclear.

  • Daud allegedly purchased another apartment from FW Residence for MVR 4 million.

The National Integrity Commission continues to investigate Daud’s alleged involvement in the MMPRC case.
