A Bangladeshi prisoner serving a murder sentence escaped from Hulhumalé Jail last week but was arrested and returned to custody the same day.

Reports circulated on social media on Wednesday about the escape. Atoll Times has confirmed that the inmate, identified as Kamarul Islam, escaped while on community service duty at a Maldives Correctional Service facility.

According to sources, prisoners are sometimes assigned community service tasks outside the jail under the corrections system, and Kamarul was among those granted such an assignment. He absconded while performing these duties.

The Maldives Correctional Service has not yet issued an official statement on the incident.

Kamarul Islam was convicted of the 2012 murder of Munirul Islam, also a Bangladeshi national. Video evidence presented during trial reportedly showed Kamarul as the last person entering the scene of the killing.

Although the Criminal Court did not find him guilty, the High Court later convicted him of murder. The court ruled that the victim’s heirs had requested life imprisonment or a 25-year sentence, along with MVR 133,333.33 as compensation.

The Supreme Court upheld the High Court verdict in February.
