A facility originally built during the COVID-19 pandemic to treat patients has been repurposed and brought into operation as a new unit under the Maldives Correctional Service.
The facility, located opposite Tree Top Hospital, contains five cell blocks with the capacity to accommodate 140 inmates.
According to the Correctional Service, the first block of the facility has been completed and 16 inmates were transferred to the unit on Saturday.

The Correctional Service stated that work on the ground floor is expected to be completed by the end of next month.

The facility will reduce logistical difficulties related to accommodating inmates brought to Malé for court appearances and medical treatment

The Correctional Service also noted that transporting inmates during adverse weather conditions presents operational and security challenges for officers, which the facility is intended to reduce.
