Meekail Naseem, the Member of Parliament for Galholhu South, has announced his candidacy for the Maldives Democratic Party (MDP) Chairmanship election.
In a post on X on Saturday night, Meekail said he had decided to contest the upcoming election and appealed for support from party members.
“I have decided to contest the upcoming MDP Chairman's election. I would like to ask for the cooperation and support of MDP members in this effort to give opportunities to a new generation of the party’s leadership,” he wrote.
The Chairmanship position became vacant after Fayyaz Ismail resigned from the post last week.
The MDP convened a meeting on Thursday to elect an interim chairman but proceedings concluded without a decision.
During provisional applications for the interim role, three individuals expressed interest: former Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Aslam, Hanimaadhoo constituency MP Abdul Ghafoor Moosa and former Dhidhoo MP Abdulla Waheed. Only Waheed’s name was formally submitted for consideration.
Waheed was then put to a vote and received 47 endorsements from 96 members present. Party officials later said the vote count did not meet the threshold required for appointment.
Following the announcement, the meeting became disrupted, with competing claims over the result. Several members protested and called Waheed the elected chairman, leading to raised voices and exchanges across the chamber.
