Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim is scheduled to make an official visit to the Maldives from September 14 to 15, marking his first official visit to the country.

Anwar is expected to arrive in the Maldives following a visit to India for the BRICS Summit. The Maldivian government has yet to officially announce details of the visit, including the programme and engagements planned during his stay.

The visit follows President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s official visit to Malaysia in April last year at the invitation of Anwar.

During President Muizzu’s visit, the Maldives and Malaysia signed several agreements aimed at strengthening bilateral relations and expanding cooperation between the two countries.

President Muizzu was also conferred an honorary Doctor of Philosophy degree in Islamic Leadership and Civilisational Development by the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) during the visit.

Malaysia is a major destination for Maldivians travelling abroad and is also home to a sizeable Maldivian community, including a large number of students.

Anwar’s upcoming visit is expected to build on recent engagement between the two countries and comes as the Maldives and Malaysia continue efforts to strengthen bilateral cooperation.
