The Criminal Court on Wednesday ordered the remand of Sunny Umar in custody for 30 days.

Family of the wife of Sunny Umar, who runs a travel agency and news outlets under the Maldives Halal Travel and similar brands, lodged a complaint with the police after allegations of sexual harassment were reported in the media.

He was overseas when the case emerged and was summoned for questioning upon his return. He was arrested at the airport on Monday night as he prepared to depart again.

Sunny Umar was released and later re-arrested under a court order Tuesday.

According to the Prosecutor General’s Office, the Criminal Court granted the request to remand him for 30 days under Articles 30 and 33 of the Special Procedures Against Child Sexual Offenders Act.

The office stated that it intends to seek an extension of the remand as the investigation continues, in line with legal provisions, and may request remand until the conclusion of the trial.

The case involves allegations concerning two girls and one boy. One girl and the boy are under the age of 18. The other girl is also accused of sexually assaulting a minor under the age of 18.
