Police seek prosecution of teacher for alleged grooming
Case highlights the ongoing efforts of Maldivian law enforcement to address and prevent child exploitation and abuse, particularly within educational settings.
Police have requested the Prosecutor General's Office (PGO) to proceed with charges against a 29-year-old male teacher accused of grooming students with age-related language.
The case was initially reported to the police in October, and the teacher was arrested on October 27 under a court order.
According to a police statement released on Thursday, the chargesheet was forwarded to the Prosecutor General's Office in November, as authorities move forward with the investigation.
The man remains in police custody, and his remand has been extended for an additional 30 days. This decision comes after the initial remand of 20 days granted by the court, which is set to expire on December 16.
The alleged grooming activities are reported to have occurred in the central region, including the islands of Meemu Atoll, Faafu Atoll, Dhaalu Atoll, Thaa Atoll, and Laamu Atoll.
However, the police have withheld the specific island where the incidents took place in order to protect the identities of the children involved, as required by law.
Police have not yet provided further details about the nature of the allegations.
