The Election Commission (EC) has decided to hold the upcoming local council elections on 4 April 2026.
EC Chairman Mohamed Zahid previously stated that the election would take place on 28 March. However, according to the announcement gazetted by the EC Thursday, the polls are now scheduled for 4 April. The commission has not stated the reason for the change in date.
In the gazetted announcement, the EC said the decision was taken to facilitate candidates for the 4 April council and women’s development council elections. The commission noted that it aims to expedite the clearance of criminal and debt records, which are required documents for candidates.
The EC said it would accept criminal and debt record forms, including forms completed by corrections, starting from last Monday. Candidates have been instructed to begin criminal record clearance from Thursday.
