A STELCO employee who was injured in a fire at the Hulhumalé power plant has died while receiving treatment abroad.
Ahmed Azmeel, 43, a supervisor at STELCO, passed away on Thursday after being transferred to Thailand for medical care. He had initially received treatment at Hulhumalé Hospital and ADK Hospital before being taken overseas on 30 November.
The fire was linked to a fault in a medium-voltage panel at the Hulhumalé power station, an incident that also caused power interruptions in several areas.
STELCO previously stated that it was monitoring Azmeel’s treatment and providing support to his family. The company said it will identify the cause of the incident and take necessary action.
