Garaging permit requirement relaxed for vehicle registration

As a temporary measure, vehicles will now be registered without this permit.

The Ministry of Transport has decided to allow the registration of vehicles with more than two wheels without requiring garaging permits issued by the Malé City Council and the Hulhumalé Development Corporation (HDC).

The decision was announced on Monday by the Transport Department as part of a set of concessions related to vehicle registration, cancellation of registration, and change of ownership.

Under the current system, registration of vehicles with more than two wheels requires a garaging permit issued by the Malé City Council and Hulhumalé Development Corporation. As a temporary measure, vehicles will now be registered without this permit.

Instead, applicants will be required to submit documentation showing that the parking location is registered with the council as a garage, along with a letter from the garage owner confirming there is no objection to parking the vehicle there.

The Transport Department has also announced changes to the process for transferring ownership of vehicles. For vehicles registered before the introduction of the garage requirement in 2009, or those registered later without a valid garage, ownership transfers will be allowed within the zone where the vehicle is currently registered, without additional garage documentation.

If a vehicle is registered with a valid garage, ownership can be transferred upon submission of a written statement from the garage owner confirming there is no objection to the vehicle remaining at the registered garage.

Changes have also been introduced to the cancellation of vehicle registration. Vehicles that are damaged, unserviceable or intended for disposal may now have their registration cancelled regardless of outstanding annual fees or penalties. Previously, all dues had to be settled before cancellation.

However, the Transport Department said vehicle owners will remain liable for annual fees and penalties up to the point at which registration is officially cancelled.

The new measures are scheduled to take effect next year.
