The Maldives has reiterated its support for the internationally recognised government of Yemen, the Foreign Ministry said on Sunday.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the ministry said it was monitoring developments in Yemen.

The Maldives welcomed the decision by the Yemeni Presidential Leadership Council to hold talks aimed at addressing the current situation in the country.

The statement also welcomed an initiative by Saudi Arabia to host the talks in Riyadh, noting that the move was part of efforts to address security conditions in Yemen.

Recent developments in southern Yemen have led to clashes involving Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. Both countries are involved in supporting Yemen’s recognised government in the ongoing conflict. However, differences within the alliance have resulted in support for opposing groups.

One of the groups involved has sought to establish a separate administration in southern Yemen.

On Friday, forces backed by the United Arab Emirates announced the start of military operations and accused Saudi-backed forces and Yemen’s air force of carrying out joint attacks.
