A bill proposing to criminalise gambling and the operation of gambling establishments has been submitted to the parliament, with penalties including prison sentences ranging from one to four years.
The proposed amendment to the Penal Code of Maldives was submitted to parliament on 10 December. The first reading of the bill is scheduled for Monday during an extraordinary sitting of parliament.
The bill was submitted by Ahmed Azaan Marzooq on behalf of the government.
According to the bill, gambling or operating a gambling establishment would be classified as a criminal offence and designated as a fourth-degree felony. The proposed basic sentence is one year, seven months and six days of imprisonment, while the maximum penalty would be four years in prison.
