Rameela appointed to lead rights body
The People’s Majlis on Tuesday approved the appointment of Aishath Rameela as president of the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM).

Aishath Rameela has been appointed as president of the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM).
The People’s Majlis on Tuesday approved the appointment of Aishath Rameela as president of the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM).
Rameela was appointed as a member of the HRCM earlier last month. She resigned from the government cabinet in December 2024, citing health reasons.
Under the current legal framework, presidents of independent institutions, including the HRCM, are not elected by members of the commission. Instead, the President nominates a chairperson from among serving members and submits the name to parliament for approval.
President Mohamed Muizzu forwarded Rameela’s name to parliament in accordance with the amended laws governing independent institutions.
