Rights body probes torture claim by drug suspect

The Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) has launched an investigation after a foreign national arrested in a drug case alleged that he was subjected to torture by police.

The case relates to an operation carried out late last month in which authorities searched two boats and seized more than three kilograms of drugs.

Two suspects were arrested in connection with the case:

  • Hanif, 36, a national of Bangladesh

  • Azhad Naseem, 28, Fiyaathoshivila, GA. Maamendhoo

The HRCM has informed the Maldives Police Service that it is investigating Hanif’s allegation of torture during custody.

Police said they would cooperate with the commission’s investigation.

“We assure full cooperation of the police in the investigation conducted by the commission,” the police said in a statement.

Police also stated that no injuries were reported at the time of arrest or during detention.

According to the police, the suspect did not report any injuries or request medical attention while in custody.

The investigation by the Human Rights Commission is ongoing.
