The Maldives Police Service on Thursday announced the arrest of another suspect in connection with the robbery of foreign currency belonging to Bank of Maldives at Velana International Airport, bringing the total number of arrests in the case to eight.

The robbery took place in the early hours of 27 October, when masked individuals stole a consignment of dollars from the airport premises. Seven suspects were previously arrested in connection with the incident.

Police said the eighth suspect was arrested on Tuesday under a court warrant. He was identified as Ismail Sirhan, 30, of Meezan, R. Maduvvari. He was remanded in custody for 30 days on Wednesday.

Police said investigations into the case are ongoing and did not disclose further details.

More than two months after the robbery, the stolen money has not yet been recovered. Daur has confirmed that the briefcase taken during the robbery contained more than USD 100,000, equivalent to over MVR 1.5 million.

The seven suspects arrested earlier remain in custody pending trial. In addition, four individuals connected to the case have been barred from leaving the country.
