Additional lifts have been installed in eight towers of the Hiyaa flats in Hulhumalé Phase 2 under a project to expand lift capacity in all Hiyaa towers.

The project is being carried out by China’s Shenyang Yuan Intellectual Group, which was awarded the contract to install the additional elevators.

Under the project, two additional lifts will be installed in each of the 16 towers, bringing the total number of new lifts to 32. Each tower will receive one passenger lift and one stretcher lift.

The project has an estimated cost of USD 18 million, equivalent to MVR 278.3 million.

The additional lifts are being installed by constructing a separate steel structure in the lobby area of each tower.

Authorities said additional lifts have now been installed in towers numbered one to eight.

They said the steel structures have been completed in all towers and that all required equipment is currently on site.

Installation work is under way in towers 14, 15 and 16.

According to the project management, 89 per cent of the work has been completed.

When residents first moved into the Hiyaa towers, there were complaints about congestion and delays related to the existing lifts.

The 16 towers each have 25 floors and house more than 25,000 residents.
