The Ministry of Housing, Land, and Urban Development has warned action against those who fail to pay rent for flats allotted under government social housing schemes and indulge in illegal activities such as renting them out.
The Ministry has waived 20% of the monthly payments for housing units developed in the Male area and various islands, as per President Muizzu’s promise. With that the ministry had instructed the owners of the units to pay the rent regularly starting from January 1 this year, the Housing Ministry said.
“However, many people are still not paying their dues and the ministry urges them to pay their monthly dues regularly,” the ministry said in a statement.
The ministry said it was investigating the illegal activities being conducted via social housing units. They are:
-
Not making regular monthly payments
-
Use of the flat for purposes other than the specified purpose
-
Illegal alteration of premises
-
Renting flat out
"Action will be taken against those who are not acting in accordance with the agreement," the ministry said in a statement.
People have previously expressed concern over the high price renting out of the Hiyaa flats allocated under the Hiyaa Project in Hulhumale Phase II. There have also been cases of illegal alterations to the units.
