Housing ministry said on Sunday that some of those who have applied for the Gedhoruveriya scheme will be given flats from the vacant units at the previous government’s Hiyaa social housing project in Hulhumale.

A total of 20,697 people have applied for flats under the government's Gedhoruveriya scheme. These include:

  • For three-bedroom apartments - 14,489 applications

  • For two-bedroom apartments - 6,208 applications

State housing minister Akram Kamaluddin told a news conference in May that the Hiyaa flats that have not been handed over to anyone are being given to a reserve list as directed by the housing ministry. However, he did not say the total number of people on the list.

At the meeting, he said, the vacant flats are for those that have been awarded flats from various categories but have not been decided yet. They include those who decided to move to the Vinares flats after receiving flats from Hiyaa, he said.

Akram told Atoll Times on Sunday that the process of handing over the remaining Hiyaa flats is now underway. He said some of the applicants for the Gedhoruveriya scheme will be given these flats, but did not divulge further details.

Of the 7,000 flats built under the Hiyaa project, 6,720 have been allocated for residential purpose. The rest is used for business and other services.

The government had earlier said the list of flat recipients would be released before the end of last month. President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has said the same. Although the list of land recipients under the Binnveriyaa scheme was released at the end of June, the list of flat recipients was not released.

Earlier this month, Akram said the flat list would be released in mid-July. When asked about it Sunday, he said the list is still incomplete and they are working to make it public before the end of the month.

"The delay is obviously because there are a lot of things that need to be looked at. There are still things that need to be validated," he said.

The state-owned Fahi Dhiriulhun Corporation (FDC) is building 4,000 housing units in the second phase of Hulhumale under the Gedhoruveirya scheme. Although one of the towers will be occupied this year, all the flats will be completed by 2025, the government said.

The 4,000 housing units are being built by two Indian companies. They include:

  • India's JMC Projects is building 2,000 units at a cost of USD 137 million

  • The remaining 2,000 units are being built by India's NBCC at a cost of USD 130 million

  • The units will be developed as 17 or 18-storey towers

  • 32 towers will be built; Each tower will have 128 apartments

These housing units include:

  • 1,200 two-bedroom apartments; 650 sqft in each apartment

  • 2,800 three-bedroom apartments; 900 sqft in each apartment
