The Maldives Broadcasting Commission (Broadcom) has opened nominations for the post of Secretary-General, following the dismissal of the previous officeholder.

Mariyam Zeeniya, who previously held the post, was removed on the 25th of last month. According to the Commission, the dismissal was due to non-cooperation with Commission decisions and for showing disrespect towards the Commission.

Following her removal, Broadcom staff submitted a petition to Parliament expressing concern over interference by the Commission’s Chairperson and certain members in the duties of directors and the Secretary-General. The petition alleged that responsibilities were being undermined by members of the Commission.

Applications for the position of Secretary-General will be accepted until the 23rd of this month. Application forms must be submitted at the Commission’s counter. Candidates between the ages of 25 and 55, with educational qualifications and experience relevant to the post, are eligible to apply.

Candidates will be shortlisted based on submitted documents, and final selection will be made after interviews with the highest-scoring applicants.

According to Broadcom, the monthly remuneration for the post is MVR 36,200, broken down as follows:

  • Basic salary: MVR 20,500

  • Living allowance: MVR 15,000

  • Phone allowance: MVR 700

Other allowances related to the duties of the role will also be provided.

Performance will be evaluated annually based on specific criteria set by the Commission. This includes the submission and approval of annual work plans at the beginning of each year, a mid-year progress report, and an end-of-year report on work completed and outcomes achieved.

As the most senior staff member of Broadcom, the Secretary-General is responsible for the administrative management of the Commission.

Zeeniya, following her dismissal, stated that her responsibilities had been hindered by some Commission members. The Commission’s IT officer has also reportedly been removed from their position. Staff members have raised further concerns regarding treatment by members of the Commission, claiming unfair practices.
