Fathimath Zahiyya, who is contesting the council election on the opposition MDP ticket, has been ordered to appear before police on Wednesday in connection with a Facebook post she made in October last year.

Zahiyya, a member of the MDP National Assembly, shared on social media a copy of the summons issued by police. The notice orders her to appear at the police station at 2.00 pm.

According to the summons, she was instructed about three months ago, on 4 October, to appear in relation to an allegation that she threatened police in a post published on her Facebook account.

The summons does not specify the content of the post cited in the complaint. However, a post published by Zahiyya on that day stated: “I have started preparing Kandoodhoo pepper spray to prepare for November 17.”

Police seized Zahiyya’s mobile phone in October as part of the investigation. The phone was returned to her about a week later.
