Maldives' president departs for official visit to Germany

The visit coincides with the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Maldives and Germany.

President Mohamed Muizzu departed for Germany on Monday on an official visit, the President’s Office said.

According to the President’s Office, the visit is being undertaken at the invitation of Frank-Walter Steinmeier. During the visit, President Muizzu is scheduled to meet President Steinmeier.

The President will also hold meetings with senior officials of the German government to discuss matters of mutual interest.

The President’s Office said the visit is intended to support bilateral relations between the Maldives and Germany.

As part of the programme, President Muizzu will visit Humboldt University of Berlin, where he will deliver a lecture on the Maldives’ experience in climate change adaptation. He will also address the German Council on Foreign Relations.

President Muizzu is accompanied by a delegation comprising Cabinet ministers, senior government officials and business representatives from the Maldives.

A business forum will be held during the visit, with participation from business representatives from both countries. The forum will include discussions on business and investment opportunities in the Maldives.

The visit coincides with the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Maldives and Germany. Diplomatic relations between the two countries were established on 5 July 1966.
