Maldives Police Service said on Saturday that a 27-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of sexually assaulting a child.

Police said the suspect was arrested on Wednesday and was presented before the court for a remand hearing. The court ordered that he be held in custody for 30 days. Police did not officially disclose the identity of the suspect.

However, Atoll Times has identified the arrested individual as Ali Aflah of Hairath, Hulhumalé, who is the owner of Bright Minds Tuition Centre.

According to information obtained by Atoll Times, Ali Aflah is alleged to have sexually assaulted children attending the tuition centre. He reportedly left the Maldives late last year and transferred his share of the tuition centre to members of his family before travelling abroad. Police arrested him upon his return to the country.

The investigation is ongoing.
