A Maldivian family who travelled to Syria during the civil war has been brought back to the Maldives, the government said on Thursday.

The announcement was made during a press conference at the President's Office.

Home Minister Ali Ihusan said President Mohamed Muizzu had instructed authorities to take steps to bring back Maldivians who travelled to conflict areas and their family members.

According to Ihusan, 23 individuals who previously returned have already received training as part of efforts to reintegrate them into society.

He said arrangements are under way to bring back another 60 individuals. These include Maldivians located in two areas of Syria and others in different countries.

Ihusan said authorities also received information that three individuals were stranded in Turkey.

Among them were a 14-year-old boy and his mother, who have now been brought back to the Maldives. The minister did not provide details about the third individual.

According to Ihusan, the individuals travelled to join the conflict and later entered Turkey, where they remained.

He said the Turkish government informed Maldivian authorities about their presence in Turkey.

In January 2024, the government also repatriated 21 individuals who had travelled to take part in the Syrian conflict.

Upon return to the Maldives, individuals are first taken to the National Reintegration Centre in K. Hinmafushi.

Officials then conduct medical examinations to identify any illnesses.

Further assessments are carried out to determine the individual’s condition and the support required.

Based on these assessments, rehabilitation programmes are developed and reviewed by the Rehabilitation and Reintegration Committee.

Individuals are released to the community after rehabilitation specialists determine that they are able to live independently.
