Govt demolishes chemical warehouse after fire incident

The Ministry of Cities, Local Government and Public Works has begun demolition of a warehouse that was destroyed by fire in Malé on Wednesday night.

The fire broke out at the Prime Fertiliser Maldives Pvt Ltd warehouse located at M. Kairge on Fulooniya Magu.

In a post on X on Thursday night, the ministry said demolition and clearance work had started.

“For the safety of the public, the Ministry of Cities, Local Government and Public Works has started demolishing and cleaning up the chemical warehouse of Prime Fertiliser Maldives Pvt Ltd which was burnt down in yesterday’s fire,” the ministry said.

The ministry noted that similar action has been taken in past incidents to address safety concerns.

The fire was brought under control at 10:49pm and was fully extinguished at 4:58am on Thursday. Police have launched an investigation into the cause of the fire.

According to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), as of 2:30am Thursday, 454 people from 15 households had registered at an evacuation centre.

The NDMA said the group included 69 women and 385 men, among them 203 foreign workers.

Temporary shelter was provided to 77 people from 10 households. In addition, 280 foreign nationals were taken in by their employers, while the Maldivian Red Crescent assisted 20 individuals.
