The State Pharmaceutical and Medical Supply Corporation has announced plans to introduce a system to monitor the availability and location of medicines across the Maldives.

Managing Director Dr Shah Mahir said the initiative is aimed at addressing issues related to access and supply.

He made the remarks during an appearance on the Raajje Miadhu programme.

Dr Mahir said the proposed system will provide information on the types of medicines available, their quantities and their locations.

“Through this system, we will be able to track the current status of medicine stocks and generate necessary forecasts,” he said.

He noted that there are challenges in maintaining supply to meet demand. He said the system will help identify alternative locations where medicines are available if they are not found at a specific pharmacy.

“When a prescription is issued at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital, the system must ensure that the medicine is available when the patient visits the pharmacy,” he said.

Dr Mahir added that the system will also provide information to doctors when prescribing medicines.

“Currently, the system does not provide this information. This is a change we need to implement,” he said.

He stated that the objective is to improve access to medicines and support coordination between healthcare providers and pharmacies.
