The Maldives Food and Drug Authority (MFDA) has instructed pharmacies across the country to stock at least 80% of the essential medicines required for their operational category within six months.
The authority announced on Wednesday that it had reviewed and updated the mandatory list of essential medicines for pharmacies.
Under the revised framework, pharmacies are classified into two operational grades. Each pharmacy is required to maintain at least 80% of the essential medicines specified for its designated grade within the six-month implementation period.
The MFDA said details of the pharmacy classifications and medicine requirements are set out in the Guideline on Minimum Requirement of Essential Medicine in Pharmacy, which has been published on the websites of the MFDA and the Ministry of Health.
The authority also said newly registered pharmacies will be granted permission to sell pharmaceutical products only after it has verified that they hold the required stock of essential medicines for their designated category.
The announcement comes amid public complaints about shortages of essential medicines at pharmacies.
The government has said it is taking steps to address supply chain issues and improve the availability of essential medicines across the country.
