Man jailed for 12 years over drug trafficking

A man arrested on charges of drug trafficking and later convicted of trafficking in diamorphine was sentenced to 12 years in prison on Tuesday.

The Criminal Court sentenced Ali Saaim of Sheerazeege, S. Feydhoo.

According to the court judgment, Saaim was charged with trafficking in diamorphine following a police search of his apartment. During the search, officers found 85 grams of diamorphine in a juice patty bag, 397 grams in a rubber packet, and 4.5 grams in six small rubber packets. A digital scale and several empty rubber packets were also recovered.

The court sentenced Saaim to 10 years, 10 months and 10 days in prison after deducting the period he spent in custody.

In addition to the prison term, the court imposed a fine of MVR 50,000, to be paid within 12 months.
