Police probe turtle attack near Kendhoo island

Police are examining a case involving the killing of turtles on an uninhabited island near the island of B. Kendhoo in Baa Atoll.
Police stated that a case of turtle killing in B. Hulhudhoo was reported by the Biosphere Reserve Office. Authorities have not released further details and have not confirmed the number of people involved.
A similar case was recorded in 2023. Seven men from Kendhoo killed six turtles. When police arrived at the island, the men were cooking turtle meat. One man was fined MVR 198,000. After he refused to pay, the amount was reduced to MVR 33,000.
Tortoises and turtles are protected species in Maldives. The law prohibits the capture and consumption of turtles. However, turtle meat continues to be consumed in some areas.
