Former Addu City Mayor Abdulla Sodiq has secured the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) ticket to contest the upcoming by-election for the Hithadhoo North constituency.

The seat became vacant following a Supreme Court judgment which resulted in the disqualification of the incumbent member, Mohamed Sinan of the People’s National Congress (PNC). The ruling was linked to a case concerning an outstanding debt, as determined by the Hithadhoo Magistrate Court.

Under the Constitution, a by-election must be held within 60 days of a parliamentary seat becoming vacant, with the application process opening within five days.

The MDP opened applications for its primary last Monday to select a candidate. The party confirmed that Sodiq was the only applicant by the deadline and has therefore been designated as its candidate.

Sodiq previously served as Mayor of Addu City and later held the position of State Minister at the Ministry of Planning.

Sinan has also announced that he will contest the PNC primary in an attempt to regain the seat.
