Sinan, Saeed to contest PNC primary for Hithadhoo North seat
The seat became vacant following a Supreme Court ruling which confirmed Sinan’s disqualification.
Former Member of Parliament Mohamed Sinan and Addu City Councilor Ahmed Saeed have applied to contest the primary for the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) ticket for the Hithadhoo North constituency.
The seat became vacant following a Supreme Court ruling which confirmed Sinan’s disqualification. The decision was linked to a case concerning an outstanding loan repayment, based on a judgment by the Hithadhoo Magistrate Court.
The PNC opened applications for its primary last Tuesday. With the deadline closing today, Sinan and Saeed are understood to be the only applicants.
Saeed recently contested the Moolekede constituency in the local council elections held earlier this month, where he was defeated by a Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) candidate.
The PNC primary is scheduled for Saturday, May 25, to select a candidate for the by-election.
Under the Constitution, a by-election must be held within 60 days of a parliamentary seat becoming vacant. The Elections Commission has announced that voting for the Hithadhoo North constituency will take place on June 6.
