The Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) has opened an investigation into the death of a student at the Maldives National University hostel.

The 18-year-old student was found dead in his room in the early hours of Monday.

Following the incident, concerns were raised on social media, including claims that the student may have been subjected to bullying. There were also reports that the student had sought assistance prior to his death.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the Commission confirmed that it had initiated an inquiry. It also called on the public to avoid sharing unverified information and personal details.

“The Commission appeals to all parties to abstain from disseminating unverified information and personal data related to this event. We further urge everyone to respect the dignity of the deceased,” the statement said.

Information shared earlier by Minister of Homeland Security and Technology Ali Ihusaan indicated that the student had contacted Police Victim Support through messages at around 8:40pm.

According to the Minister, several messages were sent by the student. A final message was sent at 12:38am.

Police arrived at the hostel at 1:08am. Officers located the room at 1:32am, where the student was found dead.

The Minister also stated that the student had a history of mental health issues and had previously received support from authorities.

The case has drawn public attention, with calls for review of the response by relevant authorities.
