The Maldives Thalassemia Society (MTS) has called for an investigation into an incident involving the transfusion of blood to children with thalassemia.

In a statement issued on Friday, the society urged authorities to examine the circumstances of the case and to share information with the thalassemia community.

The statement followed reports that blood from a storage unit affected by a technical fault had been administered to patients at the Thalassemia Centre.

MTS stated that blood transfusions are essential for individuals living with thalassemia and that the safety of each unit must be ensured.

The society called for an inquiry into how the incident occurred and requested updates to be provided during the course of the investigation.

It also appealed to the public to avoid sharing unverified information that may cause concern among patients and families.

“Relevant authorities must investigate this matter, ensure accountability where necessary, and take steps to prevent recurrence,” the statement said.

In a separate statement, the Maldivian Blood Services (MBS) said a technical issue had been identified with a blood storage refrigerator last Sunday night.

MBS stated that blood from the affected unit had been administered to three individuals but said the blood was not spoiled or contaminated.
