The State Pharmaceutical and Medical Supply Corporation Limited has announced plans to establish a pharmacy at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital to supply medicines from a single location.
The update was provided during a meeting of the Parliament SOE Committee Maldives on Tuesday.
The session was held to address concerns raised by Mohamed Ibrahim regarding access to medicines from overseas.
Representatives from State Trading Organisation, Aasandha Company Limited, National Social Protection Agency and the state pharmaceutical company attended the meeting.
Managing Director Dr Shah Mahir said the pharmacy is expected to be operational within a week.
“Our aim is to make all medicines required by the hospital available at one location,” he said.
He noted that the pharmacy will supply medicines for inpatients at IGMH.
Shah Mahir said one reason for difficulties in accessing medicines is the lack of data on stock levels.
He said work is underway to establish a system to provide information on availability across locations.
According to him, the system will also support the import of medicines from abroad.
He added that issues related to the availability of medicines should be addressed through coordinated measures.
