Sri Lanka key partner in Maldives' development efforts, president says

The President said that, to move forward as economic partners, the exchange of investment between the two countries is required.

Neighbouring Sri Lanka is a partner in the Maldives’ development and plays a role in tourism, construction and services, President Mohamed Muizzu said on Tuesday.

The President made the remarks while addressing the Maldives–Sri Lanka Business Forum during his state visit to Sri Lanka.

He referred to Sri Lanka’s role in the Maldives’ development and said the two countries should work together in areas such as infrastructure development, tourism and digital innovation. He also invited further cooperation between the two sides.

The President said that, to move forward as economic partners, the exchange of investment between the two countries is required. He also noted the need for joint work at regional level to promote innovation and address challenges.

During the speech, the President outlined aspects of the Maldives’ development. He said amendments to the Special Economic Zones Act mark a step towards the next phase of development.

He also stated that Sri Lanka is open to business and is gaining recognition as a digital hub in the region.

The President said the Maldives is at a stage in its development process under Vision 2040, which aims to build an inclusive and sustainable country.
