The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has called for caution in public statements relating to foreign policy and international relations, stating that comments made by former senior state officials can have diplomatic implications.

The ministry issued the statement following remarks by former President Mohamed Nasheed during the 10th Indian Ocean Dialogue held in New Delhi, India.

During the forum, Nasheed commented on the Maldives’ foreign relations and the dispute concerning the Chagos Archipelago.

Speaking to local media after returning to the Maldives, Nasheed said it was important for the Maldives to maintain diplomatic engagement with neighbouring countries and referred to discussions with Mauritius regarding relations between the two countries.

“It is by no means advisable to lack diplomatic engagement with neighboring countries. They stand ready to cooperate. I hope the Maldives' Ministry of Foreign Affairs will seize this opportunity to move forward with the Government of Mauritius,” Nasheed said.

He also stated that he discussed the Maldives’ foreign currency situation with Indian officials during the visit and said support from friendly countries should be managed responsibly.

In response, the Foreign Ministry stated that the Maldives remains committed to an independent foreign policy guided by national interests under a “Maldives First” approach.

The ministry said foreign policy matters are handled through established diplomatic frameworks and protocols.

According to the ministry, the Maldives seeks to maintain close relations with all countries while strengthening cooperation with regional partners and international organisations on areas including maritime security, regional cooperation and sustainable development.

The ministry also stated that comments made by former holders of senior state office on foreign policy and international relations can have broader implications.

It added that public discussion on such matters should contribute to national unity and strengthen confidence in state institutions.

The ministry urged all parties to exercise caution when speaking publicly on matters that could affect the Maldives’ diplomatic relations and national interests.
