The Criminal Court has scheduled the first hearing for Wednesday in the criminal case against Hussain Fiyaz Moosa and Hassan Mohamed over allegations linked to the documentary “Aisha”.

The Prosecutor General's Office filed Qazf-related charges against the two journalists following the release of the documentary by Adhadhu on March 28.

The documentary included an interview with a woman identified as a former employee of the President's Office, who made allegations concerning President Mohamed Muizzu.

According to court summons issued to Fiyaz and Hassan, the preliminary hearing is scheduled for 1:00pm on Wednesday.

The summons was issued by Section B1 of the Criminal Court, which is presided over by Judge Ibrahim Zihunee.

In connection with the same investigation, Eesha Ashraf, another former employee of the President’s Office, was also questioned by the Maldives Police Service.

Although police linked her to allegations under investigation, no formal charges have been filed against her.

Authorities have withheld the passports of Fiyaz, Hassan and Eesha.

Last Sunday, the Criminal Court also issued an injunction restricting circulation of the documentary and discussion related to the case following a request by the Prosecutor General’s Office.

Under the court order:

  • the documentary “Aisha” may not be distributed until a final ruling is issued;

  • discussion of claims made in the documentary is prohibited directly or indirectly;

  • information relating to parties involved in the case or the alleged victim may not be disclosed; and

  • documents and information relating to the proceedings may not be published as the case is being heard behind closed doors.
