Ahmed Azaan, a lawmaker from the People's National Congress (PNC), has filed a defamation case in the Civil Court against Moosa Latheef and Next Media Group over an article published by Dhauru.
The case relates to an article published on April 28 titled “Police Raid on Adhadhu and the Experience of Azaan.”
Azaan, who previously worked as a journalist before entering Parliament, claims the article is defamatory and is seeking compensation for damages.
In the lawsuit, Azaan requested the court to declare the article defamatory and order either its removal or correction.
He is also seeking MVR 5,000 in non-material damages, MVR 28,670 in legal costs, and reimbursement of the court registration fee.
In addition, Azaan requested an interim order directing the outlet to either place the article in draft status or make it inaccessible to the public until the case is concluded.
Separately, criminal charges were recently filed against Hussain Fiyaz Moosa, Chief Executive Officer of Adhadhu, and its Managing Editor Hassan Mohamed over a documentary containing allegations against President Mohamed Muizzu.
The court later issued an order prohibiting discussion of the case. Two Adhadhu journalists were subsequently sentenced to prison over alleged violations of that order, including reporting on the matter and questioning the President during a press conference.
