The Health Protection Agency (HPA) on Wednesday confirmed that two new measles cases were identified in the Greater Malé region this week.

According to the agency, a total of five measles cases have been reported in the Maldives so far this year. Two of the cases were imported from abroad.

The HPA stated that public health measures have been initiated following the latest cases detected in the Malé area.

These measures include investigations to identify the source of the infection and contact tracing to determine possible exposure.

The agency also noted an increase in measles outbreaks globally and within the region, including in neighbouring countries.

The HPA advised members of the public to seek medical attention if they experience symptoms such as fever accompanied by red skin rashes.

The Maldives had previously achieved measles-free status. However, isolated cases have continued to be reported in recent years, including during 2023.
