The Health Protection Agency on Wednesday confirmed two additional cases of measles in the Maldives.

The new cases follow the detection of two infections in the Greater Malé area around two weeks ago, bringing the total number of confirmed measles cases in the country this year to seven.

According to the HPA, more than 74 contacts have been identified in connection with the confirmed cases.

The agency stated that investigations and contact tracing are ongoing in line with standard outbreak response procedures to identify the source of infection and prevent further transmission.

Measles is a viral disease that spreads through respiratory droplets released when an infected person coughs or sneezes.

The HPA urged members of the public to seek medical attention if they experience symptoms including fever accompanied by a red skin rash.

Although the Maldives previously achieved measles-elimination status, sporadic cases have continued to be reported in recent years, including cases identified in 2023.
