The Maldives Police Service has seized a quantity of cigarettes and tobacco products that were allegedly imported and distributed illegally in the Maldives.

Police said the seizure was made during an intelligence-led operation targeting the illegal import and sale of cigarette brands in violation of national laws and regulations.

The operation was carried out on Wednesday night. Police searched a residence in Galolhu, an apartment at Amaan Dhodhi in Hulhumalé Phase 2, and a van linked to the case.

According to police, the operation led to the seizure of 18 cases of tobacco and 75 cartons of cigarettes.

Police also stated that the van involved in the operation has been towed. No arrests have been made in connection with the case so far.

The investigation is ongoing.

In March, Home Minister Ali Ihusan said joint operations conducted by the Maldives Customs Service and police had resulted in the seizure of approximately two million illicit cigarettes.

Authorities have reported an increase in the circulation and sale of smuggled and counterfeit cigarette brands since the government increased cigarette prices in late 2024.
