Maldives Police Service on Friday blocked a march organised by journalists and members of the public calling for the release of two jailed journalists from Adhadhu.

The protest followed the imprisonment of Adhadhu journalists Mohamed Shahuzan and Leevan Ali Nasir over allegations that they violated a Criminal Court order related to a documentary produced by the outlet.

The Prosecutor General’s Office filed charges against Adhadhu’s Chief Executive Officer and editor over allegations of defamation involving President Mohamed Muizzu.

Following a request by prosecutors, the Criminal Court issued an order prohibiting any direct or indirect discussion of matters related to the documentary.

Mohamed Shahuzan, who also serves as Vice President of the Maldives Journalists Association, was sentenced to 15 days in prison after a question he asked President Muizzu during a press conference was ruled to have violated the order.

Leevan Ali Nasir received a 10-day prison sentence after reporting on the issuance of the court order.

Journalists and members of the public gathered at the Artificial Beach area at around 4:00 p.m. before beginning a march towards Rasfannu.

According to participants, the protest was intended to highlight concerns over press freedom and the detention of journalists.

Police officers from Specialist Operations blocked protesters from proceeding through several roads, including Ameenee Magu, Nikagas Magu and Dhanburuh Magu.

The demonstrators were ultimately unable to reach Rasfannu, and the protest concluded at Dhanburuh Magu after police restricted further movement.
