Body found amid search for missing person after Gulhifalhu fire
About 80 workers from India's Afcons Infrastructure were injured in the fire that broke out in the early hours of Friday.
Human remains were recovered on Sunday from the site of Friday's fire which destroyed an accommodation block housing workers of Greater Male Connectivity Bridge project contractor in Gulhifalhu island amid search for a missing person after the fire.
About 80 workers from India's Afcons Infrastructure were injured in the fire that broke out in the early hours of Friday. An employee of the company, who lived there, had gone missing after the incident, police said Saturday.
A reliable source told Atoll Times that police searched the fire site and found a part of a human body around 11am on Sunday. Nearly half of the body, mainly the upper body parts were found, the source added.
In a message to the media, the police said that during the search for the missing person, "parts believed to be those of a human body" were recovered from the site on Sunday.
"The police are carrying out necessary investigations to ascertain whether they are part of a human body and parts of the body of the missing person," the message read.
At least 76 people were injured and treated at hospitals after the fire in Gulhifalhu Friday morning. All but four have since been discharged.
Many people were injured when they jumped to the ground from the second floor of the building to escape the fire.
