The Malé City Council has approved a proposal to issue permits for public screenings of FIFA World Cup matches on large screens across the capital.
The decision was taken during the council's general meeting on Wednesday after members considered requests from individuals and organisations seeking permission to organise public viewing events.
Mayor Adam Azim told the meeting that the council had already received a number of proposals for World Cup screenings at different locations in Malé.
According to the mayor, the applicants have offered to organise and finance the events independently without requiring funding from the council.
Councillors expressed support for the proposal, noting that the events would be funded and managed by private parties. However, they stressed that organisers must meet a number of requirements before permits are issued.
Among the conditions discussed were:
-
Organisers must submit plans that go beyond simply installing a projector and screen and include arrangements suitable for a public football viewing event.
-
Measures must be put in place to minimise disruption to residents, particularly as some matches will be played during late hours.
-
Crowd management plans must be prepared to address the large numbers of spectators expected to attend.
Councillors also noted that public screenings are likely to attract large gatherings and said organisers should ensure that venues are managed safely and efficiently.
Following the discussion, the council unanimously approved the proposal to grant permits for public World Cup screenings, subject to compliance with the conditions set by the council.
The FIFA World Cup is among the most widely followed sporting events in the Maldives, with public screenings regularly attracting large crowds during the tournament.
