President Mohamed Muizzu has announced that MVR 7 million will be allocated annually from the Green Fund to support environmental protection and conservation initiatives.

The announcement was made in the President's address marking World Environment Day.

In his message, President Muizzu said the occasion provides an opportunity to reflect on the state of the environment and the responsibility of preserving it for future generations.

The President noted that one of the main challenges in identifying environmental changes, mitigating their impacts and implementing conservation measures has been the lack of dedicated financial resources.

To address this issue, he said a fixed allocation of MVR 7 million per year would be made from the Green Fund.

According to the President, the funding will be used for a range of environmental programmes, including:

  • Management of protected areas and conservation of biodiversity.

  • Maintenance and monitoring of protected sites.

  • Initiatives aimed at generating long-term benefits through conservation activities.

  • Environmental research, information-sharing and capacity-building programmes.

  • Collaborative projects involving non-governmental organisations and school environment clubs.

The President said the funding arrangement would support the implementation of conservation measures and facilitate the development of long-term environmental programmes.

The Green Fund is used to finance environmental projects and initiatives across the Maldives, including programmes related to conservation, climate adaptation and sustainability.
