Vilimalé Hospital has temporarily relocated its healthcare services to the former Amaan Hiya children's shelter building to make way for the construction of a new hospital on its existing site.
The relocation was completed last Wednesday, with the hospital confirming that all healthcare services previously provided at its existing premises are now available at the Amaan Hiya building.
The transfer was carried out in phases to facilitate the relocation of hospital operations.
Ibrahim Abdul Razzaq Haleem, Chief Executive Officer of the Malé City Group of Hospitals, said last month that finishing work was under way at the Amaan Hiya building to prepare it for use as a temporary healthcare facility.
The relocation is part of preparations to redevelop Vilimalé Hospital into a 112-bed tertiary hospital, following concerns over the standard of healthcare services available to residents of the island.
The new hospital will be constructed on the site of the existing facility and is intended to provide tertiary-level healthcare services with modern medical equipment and facilities.
The project is being undertaken with grant assistance from the Chinese government.
In June 2025, the Ministry of Construction signed an agreement with the Chinese government for the design of the hospital.
The ministry previously stated that construction was expected to begin during 2026, with the project scheduled for completion within two years.
Once construction is completed, the new hospital is expected to begin providing healthcare services from its redeveloped premises.
The temporary relocation will allow hospital operations to continue while preparations for the construction project proceed.
