Minister of Homeland Security and Technology Ali Ihusan has rejected allegations made by former Controller of Immigration Mohamed Shamman Waheed and called on the Maldives Police Service to publicly disclose details of the investigation that led to his conviction.
The statement comes a day after the Criminal Court sentenced Shamman to 25 years in prison after finding him guilty on charges including money laundering.
Before entering the courtroom for his sentencing hearing on Tuesday, Shamman alleged that Minister Ihusan had played a role in framing him. He also accused the minister of involvement in corruption related to the allocation of expatriate quotas and claimed that he had raised the matter with President Dr Mohamed Muizzu.
Responding in a post on X on Wednesday, Ihusan dismissed the allegations.
"Shamman is making baseless and false accusations," the minister said.
He added that he had previously addressed similar allegations and maintained that no evidence had been presented to support the claims.
Ihusan also rejected suggestions that Shamman had been framed, stating that the findings of the police investigation contradicted such assertions.
"The claim that Shamman was framed is devoid of truth. This is evident from the evidence gathered during the investigation," he said.
The minister said he had requested the Maldives Police Service to provide the public with a detailed explanation of the facts established during the investigation.
Following Shamman’s comments on Tuesday, Chief Government Spokesperson Mohamed Hussain Shareef also dismissed allegations involving President Muizzu.
In addition to the claims against Ihusan, Shamman accused Attorney General Ahmed Usham of involvement in efforts to frame him. Usham has also denied the allegations.
Shamman was convicted after the court found him guilty of offences linked to the misuse of his official position. He has maintained that the case against him was politically motivated and has continued to deny wrongdoing.
