President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has said the start of the new Islamic year presents an opportunity to strengthen the country's economy and social cohesion.

In a message delivered on Monday night to mark the Islamic New Year, the President conveyed greetings to the people of the Maldives and the wider Muslim community.

The President said the country's progress and stability depend on unity among Maldivians and called for greater cooperation within society.

“We must revive the spirit of friendship, compassion and mutual assistance in our society today, following the example shown by the Ansar and Muhajirun in Medina,” he said.

President Muizzu said national interests should take precedence over political and social differences.

“Setting aside political and social differences or divisions, and prioritising national interest above all else, is the most important lesson we must draw from this occasion,” he said.

The President stated that national development requires people to work towards common goals and urged citizens to move away from harmful practices and pursue personal and social reform.

He said the government's main policy objective is to develop a generation grounded in Islamic faith and Maldivian values, with loyalty to both religion and country.

President Muizzu also reiterated the government's commitment to protecting Islamic principles, safeguarding national independence and sovereignty, and ensuring justice and equality for citizens.

Referring to the new year, the President said it provides an opportunity to revitalise the economy and strengthen the social fabric of the country.

He noted that global challenges could be addressed through hard work, diligence and innovation.

The President called on citizens to work together to advance the country's economic and social development while preserving Islamic principles and Maldivian cultural heritage.

He also urged the public to remember Muslims facing hardship around the world, particularly in Palestine, in their prayers.
