Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Chairperson and former President Mohamed Nasheed has criticised President Mohamed Muizzu, claiming that he has become politically isolated.

Speaking on a Sangau TV programme on Wednesday night, Nasheed said the President had lost the trust of people around him and pointed to his relationships with former President Abdulla Yameen and former Defence Minister Ghassan Maumoon as examples.

Nasheed said the President's actions had contributed to his current political position.

“Betrayal is not something the Maldivian people accept,” Nasheed said. “The President is currently standing there very much alone.”

The MDP chairperson also dismissed suggestions that the opposition was seeking to remove the government through unlawful means.

“We have no intention of toppling the government unlawfully. However, it is highly likely that he will bring about his own downfall,” he said.

During the programme, Nasheed was asked about previous remarks in which he suggested that there could be a change in government before the end of the year.

In response, he said any change would have to occur through constitutional processes, including removal through Parliament or a decision by the President to resign from office.

Nasheed said both scenarios remained possible in the period ahead.

The remarks come amid continuing political debate between the government and the opposition over the direction of the country and the administration's policies.
