The Maldives' first centre dedicated to shark research, education and conservation has been opened in Fuvahmulah.

The Shark Research and Conservation Hub was inaugurated on Thursday by Fuvahmulah City Mayor Ismail Rafeeq.

The centre was established by the local non-governmental organisation, The Miyaru Program, in Fuvahmulah, an island known for its tiger shark population.

According to the organisation, the hub will focus on researching shark populations in Maldivian waters and collecting scientific data to support conservation efforts.

The centre also aims to promote collaboration among researchers, scientists and local communities to strengthen the long-term protection of shark species in the Maldives.

The Miyaru Program said the facility will serve as a base for research, education and the development of conservation initiatives.
